Code-led from concept
Fire, egress, accessibility and occupancy are designed in from the first revision: not bolted on at consent stage when changes are costly.
Commercial design · NZ Building Code · Palmerston North
As a commercial building designer based in Palmerston North, we design offices, retail and commercial premises to the New Zealand Building Code, with particular strength in commercial insulated panel construction. Code-led from the first concept, documented for consent, and built to work as a business asset.
What you get from us
A commercial building is a long-term investment, and the design is where its running cost, flexibility and compliance are decided. We bring code fluency and real insulated panel expertise to that decision, designing buildings that pass consent cleanly and serve the business for decades, not just look good in the proposal.
Fire, egress, accessibility and occupancy are designed in from the first revision: not bolted on at consent stage when changes are costly.
A real edge in commercial panel buildings, designed to NZ seismic loading and the Alternative Solution pathway alongside two of the country's largest installers.
Efficient to run, simple to fit out, and designed to adapt as the business changes: the design decisions that pay back for years.
For a great deal of commercial work, no. A Licensed Building Practitioner with Design Class can design and document most single and low-rise commercial buildings, offices, retail, showrooms and light commercial. What decides the right professional is the building's complexity and risk profile, not a job title.
Where a project genuinely needs a registered architect or a specialist structural engineer, we say so and coordinate them in. You get an honest assessment of what your building actually requires, rather than being sold more than the job needs.
Commercial buildings answer to a more demanding part of the Building Code. Occupancy loads, accessibility, fire rating and egress, sanitary provisions and often Specified Systems all have to be resolved, and they shape the plan from the first concept, not as a late correction. A design that ignores them until consent stage gets expensive fast.
Just as importantly, a commercial building has to perform as a business asset: efficient to run, easy to fit out, and able to adapt as the business changes. We design with both the code and the commercial reality in view from the start.
Insulated panel construction is everywhere in commercial building, retail, cool stores, showrooms and light industrial, because it delivers structure, insulation and a finished lining in a single system. The catch in New Zealand is that panels sit outside the deemed-to-comply consent pathway and have to be engineered for our seismic loading. That is precisely where less experienced designs stall.
We work alongside two of the country's largest panel installers and design commercial panel buildings to the Alternative Solution pathway and AS/NZS 1170 loading standards. Our insulated panel design page covers the technical side in depth.
