Do I need an architect for a home extension in NZ?

No, not for most extensions. A home extension that alters the primary structure or weathertightness envelope is restricted building work, and that must be designed by an LBP Design Class holder, a registered architect, or a chartered professional engineer. An LBP architectural designer is the usual and sufficient choice for standard residential extensions. You only need NZRAB registration if the project falls into a category that specifically requires it.
